Music was an integral part of life in Ephesus, playing an important role especially in religious ceremonies dedicated to Artemis and other gods. Instruments such as the lyre, the aulos (a wind instrument) and percussion instruments were widely used. In public performances in theaters and in private gatherings, music was present both as a means of entertainment and as an accompaniment to other cultural events such as poetry readings.
