In Roman Ephesus, nature was closely intertwined with the city’s religious and cultural life. Ephesus was located in a fertile valley near the Aegean Sea, and its natural environment was considered sacred. As in Roman times, natural elements were personified with gods in Ephesus.

Artemis, associated with nature and wildlife, was the most important of these gods. The temple of Artemis Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, symbolized the deep connection between the city’s inhabitants and nature.
